The Drawdown Difference
“Drawdown” is the point in time when the amount of damaging elements in our atmosphere begins to drop on a year-to-year basis. Project Drawdown has developed realistic models for making this happen. Cool!
Today’s #whatcanwedotoday addresses several of the top 80 game changers for making drawdown happen:
• Number 5 – tropical forests When we restore tropical forests, their trees, soil, leaf litter, and other vegetation absorb and hold a lot of carbon. (Three cheers for tropical forests!)
• Number 14 – tropical staple trees When we plant a perennial tree (a food tree that doesn’t need to be planted again and again like annual crops have to be), we get more food and less escapee carbon. (Such a deal!)
• Number 15 – afforestation When we create new forests where there were none, the benefits are many (food, medicine, protection from drought and flood). But these forests also put carbon back in its place. (It’s kinda like hiring Super Man—without the tights, with a whole lot of branches and leaves!)
• Number 62 – women smallholders Women make up a big part of the agricultural workforce (almost half). When women smallholders get more resource attention, their farm yields can rise by 20 to 30 percent. And, when yields rise, there’s less pressure to deforest for additional ground. (Sisters, you rock!)
